The institute, an independent charity founded by ten University members working together with our funder UKRI’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, has completed its rapid start up phase, initialized in 2018 and delivering a fully functional autonomous institute. A funding renewal which assures its future budget for five years (starting in financial year 22-23) is now in place. Following the successful tenure of the institute’s inaugural Director, Professor James Naismith FRS FMedSci, the Institute Board is now seeking to appoint an outstanding scientist and leader as the next Director of the Rosalind Franklin Institute.

The Institute celebrates its fifth anniversary since its foundation this year and has already established a reputation of excellence in its field, and has a huge opportunity to build on this early work as it embarks on its next five year phase and beyond.

Reporting to the Institute Board, the Director will provide strategic and operational leadership and management for the Institute and its activities, fostering a culture of inclusivity and collaboration within the Institute, and nurturing enduring links with researchers and other stakeholders in the partner universities, as well as in relevant industry partners and other end users. In addition to developing and implementing the Institute Scientific Strategy, the Institute Director will seek out and secure further relevant funding to assure the sustainability of the Institute.

Candidates will demonstrate a proven track record of world class research excellence and achievement in a relevant discipline, together with broad understanding of the opportunities for impact at the interface between the engineering, physical and life sciences. Candidates will also demonstrate proven experience of scaling and leading a large-scale research initiative, ideally involving multiple stakeholders or partners and significant fiscal management and oversight.  The appointee will bring excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to articulate a clear and compelling vision for the Rosalind Franklin Institute.  Prior experience of technology transfer and entrepreneurship is highly desirable, though not essential.

The Rosalind Franklin Institute will be advised and supported in this appointment process by their executive search partner Perrett Laver. All applications will be considered by the Selection Committee in early-August. Selected candidates will be invited to engage informally with key stakeholders before final interviews, which are expected to take place in early September.

Application is by submission of a complete curriculum vitae and letter of motivation outlining your interest in and suitability for the role.

Completed applications should be uploaded at https://candidates.perrettlaver.com/vacancies/ quoting reference 6667. For an informal and confidential discussion about the role, please contact Annabel Holt on +44 (0)20 3928 6219 or via email at annabel.holt@perrettlaver.com.
