Overview of the role:

The position is for a post-doctoral research scientist in biomedical sciences to work within a team in Neuro-Bio Ltd, exploring a novel approach to neurodegeneration. The project focuses on the role of acetylcholinesterase C-terminal peptides as independent signalling molecules in their own right playing a pivotal role in neuronal mechanisms underlying Alzheimer’s and related disorders. Accordingly, the company has now developed a pipeline of candidate compounds that could be protective against the action of these toxic peptides, and hence have the potential for a novel therapy. The successful applicant will assist in evaluating these candidates using in vitro techniques as well as molecular techniques.

 

Expertise required:

  • Experience of cell culture and in vitro techniques
  • Experience in antibody-based detection systems such as Western Blotting and/or ELISA
  • Familiarity with pharmacology and medicinal chemistry.

Selection criteria: Essential

  • A Ph.D in biomedical science or similar
  • Experience of data management.
  • Good writing and presentation skills.
  • Excellent computer skills, including word-processing, spreadsheets and scientific graphic and statistical software.
  • An ability to learn new skills and to modify duties to fit a changing research environment.
  • Must be strongly motivated with the ability to work both independently and as part of a research team.

Selection criteria: Desirable

  • In vitro techniques monitoring cell viability, enzyme activity and calcium influx.
  • A familiarity with research approaches to neurodegeneration
  • An interest in drug development.
