OBN BioTuesday: Veterinary Science and Translational Medicine

Event Start Date: Tuesday, June 06, 2017 6:00 PM

Event End Date: Tuesday, June 06, 2017 9:30 PM

Event Locations
Guildford

Kindly supported by Venner Shipley, this meeting will address the fascinating topic of: 'Veterinary Science and Translational Medicine', in particular how advances in veterinary science can often be highly valuable through translational applications.

Many of the medicines, procedures and surgical equipment that are currently in use for the treatment of animals were originally developed for human medicine, primarily because human therapy receives much more funding than veterinary medicine. However, this is not a one-way street, and advances in veterinary science can often be highly valuable to human medicine through translational medicine.

Speakers on the night so far include:

Professor Noel Fitzpatrick - an orthopaedic-neuro veterinary surgeon recognised and respected globally as a true thought leader in his field of expertise.  He is Managing Director of Fitzpatrick Referrals, a specialist veterinary referral hospital in Surrey that features in the Channel 4 television series ‘The Supervet’. Noel founded the landmark Humanimal Trust charity in the UK which aims to establish a platform for the cross-pollination of expertise and ideas between veterinary and human medicine for the benefit of all living creatures.

Professor Roberto La Ragione from the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Surrey, whose research focuses on antimicrobial resistance, vaccine development and the detailed mechanisms that bacterial pathogens of veterinary and medical importance employ to colonise animals and humans.

Erwin Blomsma, CEO of ViroVet – who will talk about his pioneering company which is dedicated to the development of disruptive and innovative technologies for the control of viral diseases in livestock, which are now being translated for human use.

Steve Nanchen, Advisor, Elanco R&D - who will talk about opportunities for human assets to cross over into animal health and vice versa.
